Patient's Grandchildren Lend a Helping Hand To Hospital Drive
Fairlawn's staff got some unexpected help in their recent drive to collect school supplies for the children affected by Hurricane Katrina. That help came from 9-year-old Gabrielle Reynolds and her 11-year-old brother Jake, whose grandfather was a patient at Fairlawn.
After collecting $125 at a local community event, Gabby and Jake purchased ten backpacks, which they filled with school supplies, toothbrushes, and stuffed animals from Gabby's own collection. The children then added their donations to the more than 1,000 items donated by the hospital's staff. Many of those items came as an "admission fee" to two breakfasts hosted by the staff on the second floor patient unit.
Along with making a positive difference in the lives of children hundreds of miles away, Gabby and Jake just might forge some long distance friendships with those children. For inside each backpack, Gabby placed a personalized note, which includes her email address and some loving words of encouragement - "We pray for you and your families, and I hope this backpack will help you feel better. Please email me if you can to let me know if you like your backpack! I can't wait to hear from you."
