Partnerships

In addition to providing expert rehabilitative care, Fairlawn is committed to raising awareness about issues involving individuals with disabilities as well as extending support to those individuals and their caregivers. Therefore, Fairlawn has established relationships with a wide range of community organizations dedicated to assisting people with disabling injuries and illnesses.

For example, in 2001, Fairlawn, HEALTHSOUTH Corporation, and the American Stroke Association (ASA) joined hands to create a new initiative called the "Stroke Rehabilitation Awareness Campaign." The program's primary goal is to teach people about stroke, including its warning signs and symptoms, and to educate stroke survivors about the benefits of stroke rehabilitation.

Through this campaign, Fairlawn and the ASA provide community education programs for the central Massachusetts area. In addition to an annual "Stroke Survivor - Caregiver Forum," ongoing programs include:

    • Free "Second Chance Stroke" Screenings for stroke survivors who are having difficulties with mobility, communication, and/or activities of daily living. Held each month at Fairlawn's Outpatient Center, screenings include a mobility assessment, speech-language evaluation, and overall health assessment.

    •
    • Stroke Prevention Programs for area businesses and community organizations. Along with providing stroke prevention information, the program includes free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.

    •
    • Young Stroke Support Group for and facilitated by "young" stroke survivors. This group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fairlawn.

    Fundraising Efforts

Each September, Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital and HEALTHSOUTH Diagnostics Center host an annual softball tournament to benefit organizations serving people with disabling injuries and illnesses. Over the past five years, this event has raised more than $60,000 for the American Heart Association, Travis Roy Foundation, Spinal Cord Injury Society, United Cerebral Palsy, Arthritis Foundation, and the Dan Manning Jr. Scholarship Fund for occupational therapy students at Worcester State College.

Fairlawn has also sponsored golf tournaments for the Massachusetts Brain Injury Association and fundraising walks for the American Heart Association, Multiple Sclerosis Society, and American Diabetes Association.

Special guests at Fairlawn's benefit softball tournaments have included father-son marathoners Dick and Rick Hoyt and former Boston University hockey player Travis Roy.
