    Spine Center
     
    The Spine Center provides expert medical, diagnostic, and rehabilitative care to manage the complex problems and functional impairments resulting from acute to chronic back and neck pain. The Center is a collaborative effort of Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, UMass Memorial Healthcare, HEALTHSOUTH Corporation, and the Medical Center of Central Massachusetts.
     
    Goals
    The Spine Center is designed to help individuals with acute to chronic back and/or neck pain, including pre/post-surgical candidates and people with pain due to motor vehicle accidents, work injuries, or other spine problems.
     
    Treatment focuses on:
    • Maximizing overall daily function and quality of life
    • Promoting independence
    • Improving pain management skills

     
    Program Components
    Utilizing a group therapy format*, the program consists of three visits per week for up to eight weeks (depending on goals and disability level).
     
    • Medical/Therapeutic Evaluations

    • Aggressive Exercise Program to improve range of motion, lifting and aerobic capacity, endurance, and strength
    • Patient Education aimed at helping individuals to take responsibility for managing their back/neck problems
    • Interdisciplinary Team Approach
    • Physician Supervision (as needed)
    • Weekly Team Assessments
    • Discharge Evaluation

    Specialized Services for Seniors and Expectant Mothers
     
    The Spine Center is equipped to meet the specialized needs of older individuals with chronic back pain primarily due to osteoporosis and/or osteoarthritis. Through a progressive therapeutic exercise program and patient education, services are aimed at helping older individuals to:
     
    • Alleviate back pain
    • Increase strength and flexibility
    • Prevent/reduce risk of injury to the spine

    The Spine Center also provides specialized services for women with back pain associated with biomechanical and malalignment issues related to pregnancy. Following a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation, findings are used to develop an individualized treatment plan to alleviate back pain and promote overall health and fitness by:
     
    • Teaching proper posture and body mechanics
    • Promoting/maintaining cardiovascular fitness
    • Addressing problems associated with pregnancy, including low back pain, decreased circulation, and diastisis recti
    • Improving relaxation skills
    • Preparing physically for labor, delivery, and postpartum activities
    • Providing education on safe postpartum exercise
    • Providing information on community resources
