Historical Note
In 1987, Fairlawn became the first acute care hospital in the United States to fully convert to a rehabilitation focus.
The Victorian brownstone, the centerpiece of Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, was built in 1893 by James A. Norcross, co-owner of Norcross Brothers Contractors and Builders and one of the most prominent construction companies of the 19th century. The Norcross family lived in the brownstone until the early 1920’s when Worcester’s Scandinavian community purchased the estate and established a small med-surgical hospital dedicated to meeting the needs of area residents. For the next 65 years, Fairlawn became known for providing quality care in a warm, family-like atmosphere.
When the hospital converted its focus to rehabilitation in 1987, its founders committed themselves to maintaining that same family-like atmosphere while providing the best possible patient-centered rehabilitative care. Today, Fairlawn remains as the only acute rehabilitation hospital in central Massachusetts.
